Developed by Rachel Kiser, the Ink Method is a process- based method and original material structure that utilizes mindfulness, meditation and movement. The methods and practices emphasize personal development and growth into well-rounded, wholesome young adults.
Workshop participants are encouraged to identify with, share in, and show compassion for others. The children consistently supported one another through the 10-week semester and sought out ways to encourage one another. One student stated, “You were helping the good side. You were helping everybody.” Another student reflected on their ability to consider others and stated, “I have become a better friend myself.”
The children gained an appreciation of who they were individually and collectively and developed poise and a determination to be themselves. They gained awareness of their abilities to succeed in one or more areas of life. One student stated, “I have grown more confident in myself. More free to express my thoughts and ideas.” Another stated, “I feel more experienced. Raised up to a higher level”
The children worked collaboratively through details to develop solutions that benefited the group and not just one individual. They were able to engage in the process of finding solutions to problems, obstacles and challenges. The children described the process of letting go of ideas and integrating other’s ideas. One student stated, “We were able to see other perspectives. In the developing, we didn’t agree at first, but we saw a different way.”
“Ink helped me try new things.” The children developed the ability to face difficult circumstances with strength and tenacity - not giving up or backing away from challenges.
As characters were developed and were imbued with depth and personality, the children realized that the characters were actually a reflection of themselves and the ways in which they had personally grown. This growth included increased self- awareness, and identity, improved talents and skills, and the realization of individual and collective potential.
